Radnor Trail

The Radnor Trail is a 2.4-mile paved trail provides a quiet, scenic escape northwest of Philadelphia, from Encke Park at Radnor-Chester Road to the shopping center at Sugartown Road and Route 30. The trail travels mostly through wooded areas, passes near local parks and is lined with several benches.

Founded in 1902, the Philadelphia and Western Railway Company (P&W) was intended to be part of Jay Gould's proposed intercontinental electric railway. Gould's grand and progressive plan was scaled back, as was the route of the P&W Trains, featuring luxurious, elaborately appointed cars. It once traveled from Philadelphia's 69th Street Station to suburban Strafford. For the first few months, the trains ran every quarter hour, with the full route taking a half hour. The line remained active until 1956, when it was replaced with bus service.

In 2005 Radnor Township celebrated the opening of the multi-purpose Radnor Trail. Running through residential areas, the trail provides a popular off-road route to retail centers and schools.

Market Square Memorial Park

In 1985, DCNR provided a $25,000 Land and Water Conservation fund grant to enable the Borough to acquire 2+ acres on the riverfront for park expansion. Today, the park has over 600 feet of riverfront on 3 acres of land and offers views of the ships passing by on the Delaware River. It is open to the public all year round, is  a great spot to picnic during summer months, and is the host of many community festivals and events throughout the year.

The park attracts both old and young, as a playground is located within the park. A community center was developed next door to the park and development of a public marina is currently in the planning phase.

Wayne Art Center Exhibitions

Recent Work: Michael Doyle and Jon Redmond

December 2, 2016 – January 28, 2017
Outer Galleries

Wayne Art Center faculty members and PAFA alumni Michael Doyle and Jon Redmond come together for an exhibition of their recent oil paintings, celebrating poetic still lifes and evocative landscapes.

Michael Doyle:

Michael paints contemporary landscapes, still lifes and figures. "It is the blending of two natures that gives life to my paintings: the nature we see around us, and the nature of the human soul. I am always amazed at how a few colors placed side by side in the right place, the right order, and the right tone, complete the illusion."

Jon Redmond:

Jon Redmond chooses subjects that are usually close at hand - a humble still life, the local landscape, or the rooms of his home - but always with an eye for the way the right light can transform a familiar scene into one of beauty. "It is not so much about how beautiful the landscape is to begin with but more how I can find beauty in  something that is part of my everyday life."Elisabeth Braun: Deep Space

Brandywine River Museum

Rural Modern: American Art Beyond the City
October 29, 2016 to January 22, 2017

The Drowning, 1936, Oil on canvas, 42 x 48-1/8". Brandywine River Museum of Art
Bequest of Carolyn Wyeth
.
Rural Modern explores the adaptation of modernist styles to subject matter associated with the American countryside.

Treatments of coastal New England, small-town Pennsylvania, Midwestern farms, and other rural regions of the country illustrate the dispersal of canonical modernist styles such as Cubism and Fauvism, as well as the translation of these idioms into an American vernacular modernism. Comprised of nearly 70 works mainly completed between the world wars, Rural Modern investigates the incursion and gradual acceptance of modernist tropes in the American provinces. Some of the artists included, such as Georgia O’Keeffe, were firmly entrenched in modernism before leaving the cities behind. Other artists, N.C. Wyeth for example, started out in more pastoral settings and traditional styles but came to adopt ever more experimental approaches.

Rural Modern is organized by Amanda C. Burdan, Associate Curator, and will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue including insightful essays by Burdan and other noted scholars of American modernism.

To the Rescue, 1886, Winslow Homer, 24" x 30" The Phillips Collection
From Homer to Hopper: Experiment and Ingenuity in American
Art reflects the rich diversity of style and expression in American art created between 1870 and 1950.
February 25, 2017
to May 21, 2017

The exhibition, assembled by the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., features fifty-four superb paintings by Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Thomas Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, Horace Pippin, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and many others who revolutionized picture-making in the United States. The exhibition traces the course of modern art in the works of these artists—from the bold, investigative realism of Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins at the end of the nineteenth century, to the reductive views and psychological insights of Edward Hopper and Morris Graves at mid-twentieth century.

The Phillips Collection, founded in 1918 by Duncan Phillips and opened in the Phillips family home in 1921, was dedicated to modernism and to America’s best artists. Phillips formed his ground-breaking collection with a strong emphasis on paintings by artists whose critical thinking and creative originality would raise American art out of obscurity. He challenged the perceived superiority of European over American art alongside works by European masters. In addition, he sought works by women, artists of color, and native and foreign-born or self-taught artists, so that the collection represented a “fusion of various sensitivities” and a “unification of differences” that would parallel the multicultural character of the nation. Phillips was the first to give living artists solo exhibitions, and his support for new artists was a critical factor in the careers of many.

This exhibition has been organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.

George A. Weymouth: A Retrospective
1974, Tempera on Masonite panel, 48 x 48 in.,
Gift of George A. Weymouth, 1989

January 27, 2018 to April 22, 2018

In addition to his roles as founder and board chairman of the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art, land and historic preservationist, George A. “Frolic” Weymouth (1936-2016) was a highly talented artist.

This landmark exhibition of approximately 65 of Weymouth’s best works of art in all media will reveal the breadth of his visual investigations. From the loose energetic style and monochromatic palette of Weymouth’s early oils in the 1950s, the mature artist, mentored by his close friend Andrew Wyeth, used the mediums of watercolor and egg tempera to create haunting, hushed landscapes and powerful portraits.

Joseph Rishel, a preeminent scholar and distinguished former curator of European Paintings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is the guest curator for the exhibition. Acquainted with Weymouth for decades, Rishel will bring enormous insight into this, the definitive examination of the artist’s long career. Co-published by the Brandywine River Museum of Art and Rizzoli/Skira, the major catalogue accompanying the exhibition will feature an essay by Rishel and other noted scholars that will provide an overview of Weymouth’s five-decade career.

Huge shoulder-mounted camcorders have been replaced by smart phones; editing has evolved to simple computer programming; and distribution of finished videos is now available by downloads. How can anyone keep up with the technology?Invention Convention on January 14, 15, and 16 will explore how videographers create videos that entertain and inform us.

Invention Convention on January 14, 15, and 16 will explore how videographers create videos that entertain and inform us.

There will be plenty of video-related activities for visitors to try. Visitors can celebrate the early animators by making thaumatropes and flip books to create blended, moving images, and they can become a Foley artist by using unusual objects to create sounds for a silent video sequence. Visitors can also create their own stop motion video. And where would videography be without a green screen?

In addition to learning about the devices and applications of videography, there will be science shows on Chemistry, Physics and Weather. Visitors will also enjoy Invention Convention’s Tinkering Tables and Create-an-Invention area. At the Tinkering Tables, families can investigate the insides of an electronic gadget by using simple hand tools to take it apart. The opposite happens in the Create-an-Invention area, where children can make an invention using everyday household items. To celebrate a job well done, a Hagley “patent” will be issued for every invention.

Visitors could easily come all three days and experience something different each day.

Held in Hagley's Soda House and Library. Use Hagley's Buck Road entrance.

Admission: Adults $8, Children 4-14 $6, Children younger than 4 and Hagley members free Lunch and refreshments available from the Belin House Organic Café Volunteers ages 16 and up are needed! Visit www.hagley.org/volunteer

Victorine’s Valentine’s Day
February 11, 2017  |   11 a.m. to 4 p.m.   |  Saturday

Celebrate with your loved ones at Hagley! Victorine’s Valentine’s Day is a sweet family event with something for everyone. This is a drop-in activity, feel free to join the fun at any time from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors can show how much they love someone by making their own Valentine card, sending a secret message through tissue paper flowers or designing a candy bar wrapper. Get creative at the hot cocoa bar with whipped cream, chocolate chips, and other tasty treats.

This event celebrates the life and legacy of Victorine du Pont Bauduy. Victorine was the eldest daughter of E. I. du Pont, who built the mills on the Brandywine. She fell in love with Ferdinand Bauduy, the son of E. I.’s business partner. E. I. opposed the marriage, believing the couple was too young to be married. Ferdinand moved to France for two years, during which time Victorine pined for him. After two years, E. I. relented, and the young couple joyfully married in 1813.

Tragically, eleven weeks after their marriage, Ferdinand became ill and passed away. Victorine was heartbroken, but after a long period of grief, she found a new passion in her life. Victorine threw herself into teaching at the Brandywine Manufacturers’ Sunday School. She remained the superintendent until her death in 1861.

Media Theatre

The Media Theatre for the Performing Arts is a growing non-profit organization that has been operating as the only professional theatre in Delaware County since the year 2000. Located in downtown Media on beautiful State St., The Media Theatre was originally constructed in 1927 as a vaudeville house also featuring “talkies”. The ornate physical structure of the Media Theatre certainly represents the historic presence and unique value of downtown Media.

In 1993, Walter Strine Sr. purchased the theatre and undertook a massive renovation of over $1 million which restored the theatre to its former aesthetic glory. Throughout the 90s, the theatre was run as a for profit business under the management of Rockwell Productions. However, there was a small wing of theatre lovers that formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called the Society for the Performing Arts of the Media Theatre.

In 2000 when Rockwell Productions abandoned the theatre and its production of live entertainment, the Society stepped in, took over management, and established The Media Theatre as it is today. Producing five musicals each year, the currentBroadway Series provides opportunities to gain new audiences and strengthen the support of current patrons and old friends.
